CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Usopp
AGE: 19
CANON: One Piece

CANON HISTORY:
I'm 100% certain I couldn't summarize his canon history briefly enough, so here's a wiki for you

CANON PERSONALITY:
Usopp is a man of contradictory natures, miscellaneous talents and general niceness. His trait that most would talk about first would be his cowardly nature, which has improved with age, but still present enough. It was born out of his own security issues as a child, his father having left him and his mother behind to be a pirate, then his mother dying leaving him to raise himself alone. I mean, if all you had to keep yourself alive was you you'd probably start getting scared of anything remotely dangerous, too.

However, time and again he has proven himself capable of overcoming his own fear in order to help others. Despite his own strong sense of self-preservation, he cares for the well-being of others more, from strangers to his friends.

Also despite his cowardice, his dream is to become a great, brave warrior of the sea. He knows he still has a long way to go with this goal, but he prefers to present himself as one already. If he's introducing himself he's talking himself up, even if he knows one of his crewmates is about to ruin the illusion because they're snarky, snarky pals (unless if it's Luffy or Chopper, since they seem to fall for his lying charms all the time). Along with his cowardice, he learned from a young age to lie and tell stories, but he doesn't lie maliciously. He doesn't lie to make others look bad, he lies to make himself look good, or just to entertain other people, especially people that seem sad or lonely. Not everyone believes his stories, but if his tall tales makes them happier then he's happy if they're humoring him. (Though, his ability to lie has been so powerful that it's been known to even help him defeat strong opponents. He'll bluff his own strength or the power of his weapon so hard that the enemy will pass out in fear, saving him the need to follow through.)

He can also be quite negative about himself or predicaments they are in. He will often want to do things the more simple and easy way, even often suggesting to leave a bad situation alone that they could help with, in hopes of surviving another day (though he could easily be swayed back into action if someone tells them their heartfelt story). More importantly, he's his own worst critic. If he were asked to speak honestly about himself, and I mean truly honest, he would probably say he has the heart of a brave warrior who just needs a lot of work on the outside to match the potential on the inside. He may never be the beast of a man like Luffy, Zoro or Sanji are, but if in the end he could at least be truly dependable then he will have felt successful. He used to be much harsher on himself, culminating in him leaving the crew during the Water7 arc, before the timeskip, because he got in a fight with Luffy over their ship that needed to be scrapped and Usopp equating that to his own weakness. It made him think he could be easily abandoned as well for not keeping up with the others, or that he could be a danger to his friends by letting them down due to his weakness. He self-sabotaged himself in order to avoid any future chances of this happening, a truly timorous move. However, in the end he realized that he was wanted and needed in the crew, and though he would never be a monster of a man like Luffy, Zoro or Sanji were, his own strength and abilities were good in their own right. He STILL needs to work on his own self-worth, though, at least insomuch trust in himself when facing something frightening and overwhelming. Even post-timeskip he found himself trying to run away from people in need in Dressrosa, much like he had years ago in Arlong Park (the first big fight he found himself in after fighting a terrible pirate in his home village), but at least in Dressrosa he snapped back into action much faster. What makes his self-doubt all the more sad, especially before his big epiphany during Water7, is that his friends all truly trust and believe in him, never doubting he would let them down because has proven himself several times that he would do what was right for anyone, friend or stranger, in need.

Usopp is one of the more lively and emotional members of the crew, his behavior changing on a dime often. To strangers he'll try to present himself as serious and mature, but easily revert back to a goofball if Luffy or someone does something silly to amuse him, or back to a knee-shaking coward, hiding behind someone stronger than himself and ordering them to attack as if he were a competent captain, if something frightening is in his presence. He's easy to laugh or cheer, most often when he's playing around with Luffy and Chopper, often playing games with them like they were children or making each other cry with impressions of the other crewmates. When there's a celebration of some sort, usually after defeating the big baddie of the current arc, he will be one of the people partying the hardest, singing and dancing even if he's covered head to toes in bandages. He can be seen having some amusing conversation with Franky while working on a project or with Brook, both of whom he can be animated enough with, but not rolling around on the ship like Luffy and Chopper. He's close to Nami due to their shared fear and weakness (compared to the other crewmates), and he often will be around her as if their combined fragilities will keep them safe from harm, but Usopp is keen to shout at her anytime she tries to abandon him in their time of need or when she wants him to pay her money (or when she disappears when she owes HIM money). Zoro, Sanji and Robin he has an easy relationship with, a little more stoic with Robin and Zoro, but quick to point out when either one of them are being too boneheaded or morbid (respectively), and with Sanji they just generally get along and can do things like shopping together because Usopp is least likely to complain or wander off because something shiny distracted him. (Though, Usopp is also quickly to point out Sanji's stupid flaws, too. Really, Usopp is always blunt to everyone and everything about their flaws. Does he really have room to criticize so much? Or maybe he has the most room to talk since he can criticize himself as well?)

Truly, Usopp is a genial sort of guy that's able to get along with pretty much everyone, a jack of all trades in both skills and socializing. Even if someone had hurt him before, either physically or emotionally, he can still befriend them later, though he might have some lingering suspicions (that can be easily swayed, a la Robin winning him over after she was their enemy by giving Luffy Chopper horns with her hands and making him laugh). And if others were asked to describe him, they would probably say just that: he is friendly, fun and dependable--though, they may say that in a backhanded compliment way, "He may run away a lot, but he's always got our backs!").

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Sharpshooting: he's a master marksman whose preferred weapon is a slingshot. But it's a souped up slingshot of his own invention that uses things called "dials" that he got from Skypeia to help his slingshot pack a real extra punch. He also can create his own ammo, though post-timeskip he uses things called Pop Greens as ammo.

  • Pop Greens: these are quick-growing seeds that, when he shoots them, turns into vegetation that can help him fight, like a giant Venus flytrap or seeds that can turn into sharp bamboo stakes.

  • Haki: In his world there's an ability called Haki, and he has awakened his ability to use Kenbunshoku Haki, which used to sense people's life forces. It can be used to track people, or even predict what another person's intentions are, allowing the user to dodge blows in a fight (if they're fast enough). He's only used it once so far in order to help in a fight by shooting a target from a long distance that he wouldn't have been able to see without it.

  • Misc: He's a tinkering inventor, not quite on the level of Franky but he was able to create exceptional things from his own weapon to Nami's weather baton. Especially before Franky, he was the handyman of the ship, patching it up and fixing anything else that the crew needed fixing. He's also quite the good artist, seeming to draw and paint in realism.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Usopp Barreto
AU AGE: 19

PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES:
He doesn't have his beautiful nose to start with. How depressing! His "normal" by Earth standards nose is still large and a bit long, maybe something similar to this.

He's not near as buff as his post-timeskip self, but he's not quite as scrawny as he was pre-timeskip. He has a lean muscular body, most of his muscles being in his chest and back from archery, but he also likes to jog and generally keep a little fit.

He doesn't tend to wear overalls, because he's not a farm boy or a trendy girl from the early 90s, but he tends to wear hats, tie his hair back similarly, carry a messenger bag and wears headphones for music. No goggles, because why would you.

AU HISTORY:
Usopp's father was a 3rd generation Brazilian-American, and his mom a 2nd generation Italian-American. They met and married in Recollé where they had Usopp and lived for awhile until Usopp's father joined the military.

Up until then, Usopp's life was pretty normal and happy. He was a bit of a class clown, and played with various kids, and was a bit of a troublemaker but in a good-natured way. The sort of kid that would put a large bug in the teacher's desk but for a good laugh, not to show the teacher a lesson. He wasn't the best student, but wasn't flunking nor stupid, he just didn't like taking tests. He was always a more practical learner.

His dad had grown up in a family that liked to shoot and hunt and he began to teach Usopp at a young age how to use a gun, but Usopp's mom didn't quite like her little boy handling firearms so his dad started him on bows and arrows. Usopp both enjoyed the hobby for its own merits, but when his dad joined the military and was constantly gone from the home, Usopp kept it up as if that was the only link he had left with his father. He would join and often win tournaments to send victory photos and newspaper and magazine clippings to him for his approval. Now, with his father dead, he is unsure if he should continue to pursue it, wondering if he had ever enjoyed doing it or if it was all for an absent father figure.

In 5th grade, he and his mom moved to their first base on the east coast. His mom was a little nerve-wracked about the change in their lives (she was always a bit sensitive) so she decided to take Usopp to stay with a relative in France. They stayed there for awhile, longer than intended, about 8 months, where he befriended a boy in a park that looked as lonely as he was feeling named Alessandro, who he nicknamed Lessy. (AKA Sanji. This has been discussed with the player!)

They were close friends until his mom got word his dad was transferring to another base and she finally realized she was being a burden on her poor aunt staying at her place for so long, and they moved back to America. Usopp ugly cried a lot and promised to write Lessy, but he never heard back after sending letters, so, super bummed by this turn of events, and knowing he and his mom were just going to keep moving for the foreseeable future, kept people at more of a distance. He was still friendly and liked telling tall tales to make himself sound super cool to get their positive attention. His mom began to work to help make ends meet, so he wasn't seeing her as much and he became a latchkey kid. He tried to hide any disgruntled feelings behind the tall tales he told other kids (like how his dad was a war hero or an explorer) and diving into hobbies.

During this time, he began to do art more, painting and illustration, finding it as equally as relaxing activity as archery, but a little more convenient than having to get all the gear ready and travel to a range. He likes to do illustrations for fantasy novels he reads (because he's an escapist nerd). His more rebellious side that wanted to act our also begun to express himself when he was around 16 and he started to do graffiti, usually with stencils he creates. He hasn't been caught yet, but he's had a few close calls. That's about the only thing he's done illegally, however. A nice little artistic law-breaking.

The summer before his senior year in high school, he and his mom received the news his father was killed in combat. He dealt with the fall out from that for the next two years, just managing to pass school despite losing most interest in it, preferring to clown it up more in class to pretend nothing was wrong than to actually study, and helping his mom who was in an even worse state.

After high school, most of his acquaintances from that school left for college, leaving him to wonder if he should go, too, but any time he brought it up his mom would become upset so he stopped wondering aloud about it. But, finally, a few months before his 19th birthday his mom felt better enough that she broached the subject with him and asked what he would like to do with his life. Only problem was, by that point he had absolutely no idea.

In the end, he decided to go back to his hometown, Recollé, after Googling it up to refresh himself what their university scene was like. He hasn't applied, wanting to live in the city first to see if it was as cool as he remembered it before committing to such an expense--if he even wants to go to college in the first place.

So now here he is, staying at a bed and breakfast with an uncertain future ahead of him.

AU PERSONALITY:
His personality is still fairly close to his canon one. He likes to be the center of positive attention, telling stories and embellishments to impress people, though, of course, in this world they're a little more grounded. (No one is going to believe you fought a sea monster on Earth, Usopp, but they may believe that your dad discovered a new mountain range in Antarctica.)

He's still cowardly, but probably a more normal human amount of cowardly, since he hasn't faced the scary things that the world of One Piece has. He hasn't really had to face his fears, either, so he's not as emotionally strong as he is in canon, but he is still a good person deep down and would most likely try to save someone from trouble if no one else stepped up first. (He'd be that one dude on the bus waiting to see if someone else stops the guy harassing another person first for a few seconds before stepping in himself, but at a safe distance.) But if shit starts becoming epicly real in the game, he will have a bit of a gap between his cowardice and bravery to bridge, unlike in canon.

His negativity is more pronounced here than in canon. More depressed with a fun touch of ennui. He feels lost, completely unsure of what he wants to be in life, feeling like the past few years of his life was a wash because he moved around so much and never seemed to make connections either with people or to anything, really. He's the sort that will desperately try to hide how depressed he is, however, behind forced smiles and stories, avoiding anything Too Real.

He will still be a social chameleon, able to speak to just about anyone and get along with them, but his friendliness is a little more detached, more like a survival instinct than actual connection to people due to him keeping people at bay so it wouldn't suck as bad when he inevitably move away again. Like, he's not going to be rolling around on the ground laughing like a maniac with someone like he would in canon (at least, not yet), but he'll still give someone a hearty pat on the back and a laugh for a good joke then move on. In Recollé he can become more open to actual connection with folks, since he's in charge of his own destiny now, but since he came to the city unsure if he was even going to stay even that is nebulous.
